CHRISTMAS CHEER
Sponsored by The Salvation Army
The Christmas Cheer program is a food and toy distribution program where families
receive a Christmas Dinner food box which includes a chicken, stuffing, potatoes,
apples, corn, milk, butter, yams, applesauce and cookies. It also includes a toy for every
child under the age of 13. In 2007, The Salvation Army collected 5,901 new toys and
assisted 6,325 families through our Adopt-a-Family and Christmas Cheer programs. The
Christmas Cheer program takes place at the DiSalle Center at the Ohio State Fair
Grounds. Volunteers are needed to assemble boxes, decorate the Center, sort food and
toys, fill food boxes, register families, give out toys and clean up. Unless otherwise
noted, all volunteers for the Cheer program must be at least 13 years old. We are
in need of a minimum of 25 volunteers. We would like for all volunteers to wear their
chapter shirts to that we can represent our chapter. We will be order new chapter shirt
so look out for more information on pricing and order information. If you are interested in
participating in this event please contact Shimiah Packer at cs@coae-nsbe.org.
When: Thursday 12/17/09
Shift Time: 6:30-9:30pm
Directions: The Cheer program takes place at the DiSalle Center at the Ohio State
Fairgrounds. The DiSalle Center is located at 717 E. 17th Avenue, just west of the Ohio
Historical Society:
From 1-71 take the 17th Avenue exit and head WEST about ¼ miles. The DiSalle
Center building is clearly marked and will be on your RIGHT.
Parking: There is plenty of FREE parking adjacent to the building. If you are able,
please park further away from the building so we can save closer spots for our clients
picking up food and toys (and save a lot of legwork for our cart runners)!
Attire: Most volunteer duties require standing. Please wear comfortable clothing and
shoes. Also, it tends to be cold in the building so plan accordingly.
Cart Runners: If you signed up to be a Cart Runner or would like to be a Cart Runner,
please bring very warm clothing (hats, mittens, scarves etc….). These volunteers help
people to their cars with their toys and food.
Food/Snacks: If you are volunteering during the noon or dinner hour, we will provide
meals. Snacks and beverages will be available throughout the day.
Miscellaneous: Please do not bring valuables into the DiSalle Center. There is no safe
place to lock purses etc. If you have a pair of work gloves and/or a box cutter, you may
want to bring them. These are handy for many of the volunteer jobs. When you go into
the DiSalle Center, look for the VOLUNTEER Table. The VOLUNTEER table is where
you will check in and get your volunteer assignment. For groups, all volunteers are
listed under the contact person. (COAE’s Contact – Shimiah Packer)
Please do your best to arrive on time. In an effort to make everyone's volunteer
experience a valuable one, we do not over-schedule volunteers. Therefore, when large
groups are late it causes delays in the distribution of food and toys, and long lines for
clients. Also, it is not necessary to arrive more than five minutes BEFORE your
scheduled time.
